These driving tour FAQs explain Route GT’s hosted group driving tours: what to expect from the cars, routes and hotels to booking, insurance and support on the road. Browse our UK driving tours and private group tours, then contact us if you need help choosing.
Start here if you’re considering your first organised group driving tour or want to understand how a Route GT weekend works.
A Route GT group driving tour brings together drivers and cars for a professionally organised road trip built around exceptional roads, shared stops, quality hotels and a strong social atmosphere. Route GT plans and hosts the event, provides the itinerary and navigation support, and brings the group together throughout the journey.
The difference is the planning and the people. Routes are researched around driving quality, scenery and flow; hotels and stops are chosen to work with the cars and the itinerary; and you share the experience with a group of fellow enthusiasts rather than simply travelling from one destination to another.
Guests meet at the start of the event for registration, introductions and the tour briefing. Route GT provides the planned route and event information, the group heads out on the same day’s journey, and everyone comes back together at planned stops, lunch points and the hotel. Cars often travel together naturally, but it is not a tightly controlled convoy.
The shared route and regroup points create a genuine group-driving experience, and cars will often travel together for parts of the day. However, Route GT does not require everyone to remain bumper-to-bumper or maintain one fixed pace. Each driver must always make their own safe and lawful decisions on the road.
No. Route GT events are not races, time trials or competitive road events. The aim is to enjoy great roads, scenery, cars and company without pressure to compete or keep up with another driver.
Yes. Many guests join Route GT having never been on an organised group driving tour before. The event structure, pre-tour information, route planning, navigation equipment and on-tour support are designed to make the experience straightforward from the start.
Yes to both. Solo drivers, couples, friends and family members all join Route GT events. Many guests arrive knowing nobody else and leave having made new friends through the cars, dinners, stops and shared miles.
Numbers depend on the route, hotels and event format, but public tours are kept at a size that allows the event to remain personal and well organised. The aim is a strong group atmosphere without turning the road trip into an unmanageable convoy.
Questions about what you can bring, how the routes are designed and what actually happens once the cars leave the hotel.
No. Sports cars and supercars form a large part of the Route GT community, but the experience is about enthusiasm for driving rather than owning a particular badge. Road-legal grand tourers, performance cars, classics and other suitable enthusiast vehicles can all be part of the group.
Your car must be road legal, appropriately insured and mechanically suitable for the mileage and roads involved. Check servicing, tyres, brakes, fluids and general condition before the event so the car is ready for several days of touring.
Routes are selected for the way they drive: road character, rhythm, scenery, variety and how the whole day fits together. We also consider practical details such as fuel, suitable group stops, lunch, parking and the final approach to the hotel.
Route GT researches and develops each itinerary using route knowledge and practical checks. The level of on-road checking can vary as a route is refined, and conditions may change before or during a tour. For a specific event, check the latest itinerary and event updates.
Navigation arrangements vary slightly by event, but Route GT tours commonly use pre-programmed navigation together with route information and two-way radios where included. Everyone is following the same planned journey, while each driver remains responsible for their own navigation and road decisions.
If you miss a turn, do not speed up or make an unsafe manoeuvre to catch the group. Follow the route instructions toward the next designated regroup point. If you cannot rejoin safely, pull over where it is legal and safe, then call the tour host using the contact details provided for the event.
No. A Route GT group drive is about sharing the road trip, not matching another car’s pace. There is no requirement to keep up, close a gap or drive beyond your comfort level. Every participant must choose a safe and lawful pace for themselves, their vehicle and the conditions.
Every route is different, but the day is designed as a touring experience rather than continuous driving from morning to night. Planned coffee, lunch, scenic and regroup stops help break up the mileage and give the group time to talk, photograph the cars and enjoy the places being visited.
The road may be the reason for going, but the Route GT experience continues once the cars are parked.
Exact inclusions vary by event, but multi-day Route GT tours typically combine accommodation, breakfast, selected group dinners, the planned driving itinerary, event materials and navigation or communication equipment. Some tours also include ferries, attractions or route-specific experiences.
Unless a tour page says otherwise, guests should normally budget for their own fuel, lunches and daytime drinks, personal purchases, vehicle insurance, travel insurance and breakdown or recovery cover. Tolls, crossings or parking outside the included itinerary may also be additional.
Route GT selects quality hotels that work for the whole group-driving experience, not simply for the bedroom. We consider comfort, food, location, parking, group arrival, social areas and how the property fits into the driving itinerary.
Parking is a major consideration when planning a Route GT stay. We assess access, capacity and suitability for the kinds of cars attending and arrange group or reserved parking where the individual hotel and package allow it. Any important restrictions are communicated before the tour.
Most multi-day Route GT tours include breakfast and organised group dining, although the exact meal package varies by event. Evening meals are an important part of the social experience because they bring everyone back together after the day’s driving.
Tell Route GT about dietary needs and allergies before booking, with details of any medically significant allergy. We will pass the information to the relevant hotels and restaurants and ask what they can provide. Venues control their own kitchens and cannot always guarantee an allergen-free meal or prevent cross-contamination. Please confirm directly with the venue where an allergy could put you at risk.
There is plenty of life beyond the wheel. Route GT deliberately balances the driving with stops, hotel time, dinners and social time. For many returning guests, the friendships and evenings are as memorable as the roads themselves.

The practical questions: securing your place, preparing properly and knowing Route GT is there throughout the event.
Start on the Driving Tours page. Each event shows its current status, such as Booking Open, Reserve List or Pre-Register. Follow the link on that tour page. A booking request is confirmed only when Route GT sends written booking confirmation. If you are unsure which step is open, contact Route GT before completing a form.
The deposit amount varies by tour and is shown before you book. Deposits are normally non-refundable if you cancel, subject to your legal rights and the booking terms. Your confirmation shows when the remaining balance is due. Under Route GT’s current Terms, this is normally around 90 days before departure; use the date in your booking confirmation as the deadline for your tour.
Each driver must hold a valid licence for the vehicle and countries on the route. Your car must be road-legal and insured for its intended use throughout the tour. Route GT strongly recommends travel insurance that suits your circumstances, plus breakdown and recovery cover for every tour location. These costs are yours unless your booking expressly includes them.
If you cancel, contact Route GT in writing as soon as possible. Deposits are normally non-refundable, and any further cancellation charge depends on your booking terms, the timing and supplier costs that cannot be recovered. If Route GT changes or cancels a tour, the options depend on the scale and reason for the change and your legal rights. Weather, road closures or ferry disruption may require a route or timing change.
Read the cancellation terms and tour change terms before booking.
The Route GT team hosts the event from arrival through to the final day, coordinating the itinerary, group stops, hotels and operational details. Radios, navigation equipment and event information are provided where specified, and the team remains available to help with tour-related issues along the way.
The relationship does not have to end at the final stop. Route GT is built around a growing community of drivers, with returning guests joining future multi-day routes, day events and social gatherings throughout the season.
Yes. Route GT creates private group driving tours for automotive clubs, groups of friends, companies, dealerships, brands and celebrations. Routes, hotels, pace, experiences and event details can be shaped around your group rather than a public calendar departure.
All participants must be at least 18 on the first day of the tour unless Route GT has agreed otherwise in writing. Ask us before booking if a participant may need an exception; it must be confirmed in writing.
Tell Route GT as soon as your vehicle or other booking details change. Amendments are subject to availability. If a ferry, rail crossing or other supplier booking has already been made, change fees may apply, along with any reasonable administration charge. We will confirm known costs before completing the change. A late vehicle change may not be possible once supplier arrangements are finalised.
Some tours have a minimum group size. If a minimum applies, Route GT will tell you before you book. If the minimum is not reached, Route GT may cancel or reschedule the tour under the booking terms. We will contact affected customers with the available options and explain any refund or transfer due under those terms.
Room types and occupancy options vary by tour and hotel. Check the accommodation details on the individual tour page or itinerary before booking. If you need a single room, accessible accommodation or a particular room arrangement, contact Route GT before you book so we can confirm availability and any supplement with the hotels.
